Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, British soldier, early 20th century. Lord Kitchener (1850-1916) regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Lord Kitchener's military achievements were remarkable, as he successfully regained the Sudan for Egypt through his decisive victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. He further displayed his leadership skills during the Boer War (1899-1902) when he commanded British forces.
