Interior of the Tube - Mr. Stephenson Driving the Last Rivet, 1850. Opening of the Britannia Tubular Bridge across the Menai Straits in Wales....a very interesting episodical proceeding took place in the interior of the Carnarvonshire land tube - that of putting the last rivet into the plates, making exactly the 2, 000, 000th that have been used. The rivet having been put in by Mr. Mare, was driven home and fastened by Mr. [Robert] Stephenson, by successive strokes with a huge hammer. This ceremony was followed by the waving of hats and the deafening acclamations of the workpeople'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'Interior of the Tube - Mr. Stephenson Driving the Last Rivet, 1850,' depicts an intriguing moment in the construction of the Britannia Tubular Bridge across the Menai Straits in Wales. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the ceremonial moment when the last rivet was being put in place, marking the completion of the 2,000,000th rivet used in the project. The scene takes place inside the Carnarvonshire land tube, illuminated by the flickering light of candles. Mr. Mare, holding a hammer, has inserted the last rivet between the plates. The rivet is then driven home and secured by none other than the renowned engineer, Mr. Robert Stephenson, with powerful strokes of a massive hammer. The event was met with great enthusiasm from the workers, who waved their hats and erupted in deafening acclamations. The Britannia Tubular Bridge, a marvel of 19th-century civil engineering, was a significant achievement in the field of transportation. Constructed using iron and designed by Francis Trevithick, the bridge was a precursor to the tube tunnels used in modern railways and transport systems. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity, perseverance, and teamwork that went into building such structures during this era. The photograph, with its dark, cavernous interior and the focused intensity of the workers, evokes a sense of history and the spirit of discovery. It is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the construction of a bridge that played a crucial role in shaping the transportation landscape of Britain.
