The ceremony took place on the lush lawn of the Royal Dublin Society's premises in Merrion-square, an area steeped in Ireland's rich history. The Lord-Lieutenant expressed his hope that the building, which would become a part of the National Museum of Ireland, would "furnish ever-increasing accommodation for the pursuits of useful knowledge and humanising accomplishments." He continued, "may it open for the coming generations worthy temples of science, art, and learning, at whose shrine they may be taught how most to reverence their Creator, and how best to benefit their fellow-creatures." The proposed museum, designed by architect Frederick V. Clarendon, was to be an impressive structure, with dimensions of 225 feet in length, 45 feet in breadth, and 55 feet in height.
