Their Majesties The King and Queen Inspecting... the Nimrod at Cowes, 1907, (1909)

Their Majesties The King and Queen Inspecting The Equipment on the Nimrod at Cowes, 1907, (1909). King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra inspecting Shackletons ship at the port of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in time as Their Majesties The King and Queen, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, inspect the renowned Nimrod ship at Cowes in 1907. Standing tall against the picturesque backdrop of the port on the Isle of Wight, this image showcases the admiration and curiosity that surrounded Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's vessel. Ernest Shackleton, a true pioneer of his time, embarked on three daring expeditions to Antarctica. It was during his second expedition from 1907 to 1909 that he achieved an extraordinary feat - reaching the Farthest South latitude at an impressive 88° S. This remarkable accomplishment brought him within a mere 97 geographical miles from conquering the elusive South Pole. Not only did Shackleton push boundaries in exploration history, but he also led his team to conquer Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. These achievements earned him knighthood by King Edward VII himself as recognition for his exceptional contributions to science and discovery. Tragically, Shackleton's life was cut short during his final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. However, this photograph serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination that forever left its mark on Antarctic exploration. Preserved within the pages of "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton C. V. O. , this illustration offers us a glimpse into history and reminds us of humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge and adventure beyond our known horizons.
