EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Marshal Lyautey, a prominent French soldier in 1930. Known for his military prowess, Lyautey commanded the French troops during the invasion and conquest of Madagascar from 1896 to 1898. His leadership extended further as he served as the military governor of Morocco from 1912 to 1925. Intriguingly, this image also sheds light on Lyautey's political stance. Although appointed as the French Minister of War in December 1916, he resigned just three months later due to his disagreement with General Robert Nivelle's planned Aisne campaign. This bold move led to the fall of Aristide Briand's government. Lyautey's remarkable career culminated in him being honored with the prestigious title of Marshal of France in 1921. However, it is worth noting that towards his later years, he became associated with the French fascist movement. The photograph showcases Lyautey seated and engaged in conversation while donning a distinguished hat and sporting an impressive mustache—a symbol often associated with authority and masculinity. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this historical moment captured by an unknown creator. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of Lyautey's significant contributions during World War I but also his complex persona that encompassed both military brilliance and controversial political affiliations.
