The Merry Swiss Boy The Return of the Tourist, 1865. Artist: John Tenniel
The Merry Swiss Boy The Return of the Tourist, 1865. On the one side, a jolly Swiss landlord sings as he counts his money. On the other, a dejected young British tourist faces a pile of unpayable bills. This cartoon is accompanied by one of Punchs little ditties entitled The Real Swiss Boy. Foreign trips were very popular during the mid Victorian period and the point Mr Punch is making is that the foreigners make their fortunes out of the tourist industry through a system of ruthless overcharging. At the end of the season, the tourist is penniless, his wealth having neatly transferred itself to the other side of the balance sheet. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 15, 1865

The Merry Swiss Boy The Return of the Tourist, 1865
EDITORS COMMENTS
by John Tenniel is a captivating print that tells a story of contrasting fortunes during the mid-Victorian era. On one side, we see a cheerful Swiss landlord joyfully counting his money while singing with gusto. His money bag overflowing with wealth symbolizes his success in the tourist industry. On the other side, a despondent young British tourist faces an overwhelming pile of unpayable bills. This image represents the harsh reality faced by many travelers who find themselves penniless after indulging in foreign trips. Through this cartoon, Mr Punch highlights how foreigners profit from tourists through ruthless overcharging, leaving them impoverished at the end of their journeys. The print is accompanied by one of Punch's little ditties titled "The Real Swiss Boy" adding another layer to its narrative. It underscores the popular trend of foreign travel during that time and emphasizes how wealth effortlessly transfers from tourists to local businesses. John Tenniel's artistic prowess shines through as he expertly captures both sides of this financial divide. His attention to detail and monochrome style evoke a sense of nostalgia for 19th-century life and highlight societal issues surrounding finance and tourism. "The Merry Swiss Boy The Return of the Tourist, 1865" serves as a reminder that even in an age marked by exploration and adventure, financial disparities persist across countries and individuals alike.
