Papermaking in China, AD 105, (c1850)
Papermaking in China, AD 105, (c1850). This year is often cited as the year in which papermaking was invented. In that year, historical records show that the invention of paper was reported to the Chinese Emperor by Ts ai Lun, an official of the Imperial Court. However, ancient paper pieces from the Xuanquanzhi ruins of Dunhuang in Chinas northwest Gansu province apparently were made during the period of Emperor Wu who reigned between 140 BC and 86 BC. It appears that early Chinese paper was made by a suspension of hemp waste in water, washed, soaked, and beaten to a pulp with a wooden mallet. From a hand coloured engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ancient art of papermaking in China, believed to have originated in AD 105. The image showcases a scene from centuries past, depicting men engaged in the intricate process of creating paper. Set against a backdrop of serene waters and lush surroundings, these skilled craftsmen diligently work outdoors, immersing themselves in their trade. The origins of papermaking trace back to Ts'ai Lun, an official who reported his invention to the Chinese Emperor during this period. However, recent discoveries challenge this narrative as ancient paper fragments found at Xuanquanzhi ruins suggest that it was made even earlier during Emperor Wu's reign between 140 BC and 86 BC. The technique employed by these early Chinese artisans involved using hemp waste suspended in water. Through meticulous washing, soaking, and beating with wooden mallets, they transformed the fibers into a pulp suitable for making paper. This labor-intensive process required precision and skill passed down through generations. The print evokes a sense of admiration for these industrious individuals who dedicated themselves to perfecting their craft amidst breathtaking natural beauty. It offers us a glimpse into China's rich history and its significant contributions to global trade and industry. As we marvel at this snapshot frozen in time - vibrant colors highlighting every detail - let us appreciate the ingenuity behind one of humanity's most transformative inventions: papermaking.
