The Prince of Wales landing at St. John, New Brunswick... 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Prince of Wales landing at St. John, New Brunswick, [Canada], - from a drawing by our special artist G. H. Andrews, 1860. His Royal Highness [future King Edward VII] reached the harbour of St. John late on the evening of Thursday, the 2nd August, the cannons on Partridge Island bearing the signal of the joyful tidings. An immense crowd of people, eager spectators, assembled at the wharf called Reed's Point to witness the arrival of the steamer, which was greeted with prolonged and enthusiastic cheering. At ten o'clock the following morning the Prince and suite disembarked from the Styx, amidst the roar and thunder of artillery; and was received on landing by his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, the Mayor, and Corporation, and escorted to his residence at Chipman House (formerly the abode of the late Chief Justice Chipman) by a grand procession, composed of the Executive Council, both Houses of the Legislature, the civic magistrates, and the different societies and trades'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, though a print from a drawing by G.H. Andrews in 1860, transports us back in time to the historic moment when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made his grand entrance into St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. The image depicts the royal steamer approaching the harbor of St. John late on the evening of August 2, 1860. The cannons on Partridge Island blast out a welcoming salute as an eager crowd gathers at Reed's Point, the wharf, to witness the arrival. The following morning, at ten o'clock sharp, the Prince and his suite disembarked from the Styx, greeted by the roar and thunder of artillery. His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, the Mayor, and Corporation awaited his arrival to escort him to Chipman House, his temporary residence. The procession was a grand spectacle, consisting of the Executive Council, both Houses of the Legislature, civic magistrates, and various societies and trades. The Illustrated London News, from which this print originated, captured the excitement and anticipation of the people as they welcomed the future King of England to their shores. The image stands as a testament to the profound impact of the royal visit on the community, leaving a lasting impression on the annals of Canadian history.
