EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the lively reception of Parisian railway excursionists in Dunkerque, France, in 1850. The scene unfolds on Rue Arago as three massive trains, known as 'monsters,' pull into the station, carrying an astonishing 2100 passengers. The low fare of 9f. (7s. 6d.) had enticed clerks, shopmen, and employees alike to embark on this Sunday trip to the seaside town. Upon arrival, the Parisians were greeted with an enthusiastic welcome from the locals. The spirit of the reception was so vibrant that it transformed the town into a festive atmosphere. The Rue Arago was adorned with an impressive display of flags and standards, garlands of roses and other flowers, and ribbons, creating an enchanting tableau. As the sun began to set, the excursionists, accompanied by ten thousand residents of Dunkerque, gathered at the railway station. The atmosphere was electric as they bid farewell, not with a sad adieu, but with a heartfelt 'au revoir!' and a cheer for the people of Dunkerque. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, when the simple pleasure of a railway excursion brought people together in celebration and camaraderie.
