Reunion of Vessantara and Maddi with Their Children and Parents

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning 19th century opaque watercolor and gold on cloth painting from Southeast Asia, specifically from Siam (now Thailand). The scene depicted in this artwork is taken from the ancient Indian Buddhist text, the Vessantara Jataka. The Jataka tales are a collection of stories about the previous lives of Gautama Buddha, and the Vessantara Jataka is one of the most popular and widely performed stories in Southeast Asian Buddhist cultures. In this particular scene, Prince Vessantara, a renowned prince known for his generosity, is reunited with his wife Maddi and their children after years of separation. The Prince had given away his wife and children as gifts to a brahmin and a merchant, respectively, in order to alleviate their suffering. However, the Prince's parents, King Vessantara and Queen Supanee, had secretly arranged for their return. The reunion is depicted in this painting with an abundance of emotion and warmth, as the Prince and his family are joyfully reunited with their parents. The painting's intricate details and vibrant colors bring the scene to life, with the gold accents adding an air of royalty and grandeur. The clothing and accessories of the figures are indicative of the traditional attire of the time, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Southeast Asia during the 19th century. The painting is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), a renowned museum that holds an extensive collection of Asian art. This artwork is a testament to the enduring influence of Buddhist stories and traditions in Southeast Asian art and culture.
