EDITORS COMMENTS
Victor Hugo, French author and central figure of the Romantic movement, captured on his deathbed on 22nd May 1885. This poignant photograph portrays the renowned novelist in his final moments, reflecting a life dedicated to literature and political activism. Hugo's literary contributions were vast and influential, with notable works such as Notre Dame de Paris (1831), Les Miserables (1862), and Les Travailleurs de la Mer (The Toilers of the Sea) (1866). His writings often explored themes of social injustice and human suffering, resonating deeply with readers across generations. However, Hugo's involvement in politics was equally significant. Elected to the Assembly as a Republican during Europe's year of revolutions in 1848, he faced exile after Napoleon III's coup d'état. For two decades, he sought refuge in Guernsey within the Channel Islands until returning to France in 1870. This black-and-white portrait captures not only Hugo's physical appearance but also his profound impact on French literature and society. With a majestic beard framing his face and an air of contemplation surrounding him, it serves as a testament to his intellectual prowess. Preserved within Album de Photographies: Dans L'Intimité de Personnages Illustres from Editions MD in Paris between 1860-1920, this print offers viewers an intimate glimpse into Victor Hugo's final chapter—a moment frozen forever for future generations to appreciate.
