Fine Art Prints from Historic England
Farmstead, Lavenham 29817_004
Late medieval farmstead in Lavenham, Suffolk. This 2015 aerial photograph shows the buried remains of a late medieval farmstead revealed as cropmarks. You can see some of the farmas field boundaries and a trackway which linked this farm to its neighbours. They are reminders of the generations of families who lived and worked the land here. These farms were abandoned after changes in farming practice and illustrate the widespread changes that have affected the rural landscape of Suffolk over the last 500 years. This is a good example of the many Suffolk farmsteads Historic England has discovered from the air in recent years. It looks similar to prehistoric settlements found in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire but is more typical of late medieval farmsteads still in use elsewhere on the Suffolk clay lands

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the hidden history of a late medieval farmstead in Lavenham, Suffolk. Taken in 2015, the image reveals the buried remains of this once-thriving agricultural community through cropmarks. The intricate field boundaries and a trackway that connected neighboring farms are visible, serving as poignant reminders of the countless generations who toiled on this land. The abandoned farmsteads depicted here bear witness to significant changes in farming practices over the past five centuries, reflecting the broader transformation of rural landscapes across Suffolk. Historic England has unearthed numerous similar sites from above in recent years, shedding light on these forgotten corners of our heritage. Interestingly, while resembling prehistoric settlements found in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, this particular farmstead aligns more closely with late medieval structures still seen elsewhere on Suffolk's clay lands. Its unique characteristics provide valuable insights into how people lived and worked during that era. Damian Grady's expert lens beautifully captures both the historical significance and natural beauty of this site. This print serves as a powerful testament to our shared past and encourages us to appreciate the rich tapestry woven by those who came before us.
