EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Woolworths store in Hammersmith, Greater London. The image showcases the corner entrance of the store at 84-90 King Street, as seen from the south-east. Originally opened in 1914 as Woolworths store 41, this historical site underwent redevelopment and expansion in the 1930s. Despite suffering minor bomb damage during World War II, it remained a beloved shopping destination for locals throughout the years. The classic art deco architecture of this building is truly remarkable. Its striking red and white facade stands out amongst its surroundings, exuding a sense of timeless elegance. The use of faience tiles adds an extra touch of sophistication to this magnificent structure. After serving as a Woolworths store for several decades, it sadly closed its doors in 1982. However, its legacy lives on through subsequent occupants such as a casino and a KFC restaurant that took over the premises in later years. This photograph by Nicholas Anthony John Philpot not only captures a piece of history but also serves as a reminder of how our urban landscapes evolve over time. It beautifully encapsulates both nostalgia and progress within one frame, making it an invaluable addition to any collection celebrating architectural heritage and retail history alike.
