EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the renowned Bedford Lemere and Co. in 1907, showcases an early motor car being hoisted up to a higher level in the multi-storey car park at Mitchell Motors Company, situated on Wardour Street in the heart of Westminster, London. The car, with its elegant design and a dapper chauffeur at the wheel, is a testament to the burgeoning automobile era. The Mitchell Motor Works and Garage, established in 1906, was a pioneering venture that offered five storeys of space for vehicle owners to garage their cars. The innovative system of lifts and turntables was designed to cater to the unique needs of Soho's theatregoers, who sought convenience and ease in parking their vehicles close to the entertainment district. The photograph transports us back to the Edwardian era, a time when the idea of commuting long distances by car was still relatively unheard of. The car park's modern design and advanced technology were a stark contrast to the horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets that dominated the cityscape at the time. The Mitchell Motor Works and Garage played a significant role in the history of automobile transportation in London, paving the way for the development of more sophisticated parking solutions and contributing to the growing popularity of personal vehicles. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the evolution of transportation and urban infrastructure.
