Heston Aerodrome c. 1930s AFL03_aerofilms_c19981
Heston Aerodrome, Hounslow, Middlesex. The control tower (centre) may have been the first purpose-built example and became the model for this class of building. Between 1931 and 1937 Heston Airport was operated as a commercial airport by Airwork Ltd (whose logo appears on the the Customs House and aircraft), after which it was taken over by the Air Ministry. It was used as a fighter base during wartime, but Heathrow was preferred as the site for a commercial airport and the aerodrome was closed in 1947. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Aerofilms in the 1930s, showcases Heston Aerodrome in all its glory. Situated in Hounslow, Middlesex, this aerial view highlights the bustling activity of the airfield, with a diverse array of aircraft taking off and landing. The control tower, prominently featured in the centre, is believed to be one of the first purpose-built examples and served as a prototype for similar structures in the future. At the time, Heston Aerodrome was under the management of Airwork Ltd, as indicated by their logo on the Customs House and some of the aircraft. Between 1931 and 1937, the airfield played a significant role in the aviation industry. However, its future would change drastically. During the wartime years, Heston Aerodrome transformed into a fighter base. Despite its military importance, Heathrow Airport eventually emerged as the preferred site for a commercial airport. Consequently, Heston Aerodrome was closed in 1947. In this image, we can observe a variety of aircraft, including biplanes and monoplanes, parked on the tarmac. Additionally, several cars are visible, adding to the sense of movement and activity. This photograph is a captivating snapshot of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the history of aviation in the United Kingdom.
