Farriers Hall Community Centre, Farriers Way, Borehamwood, Elstree and Borehamwood, Hertsmere, Hertfordshire. F Bryer, Director of Laings Building Division, presenting Councillor J Tatham with the key to the old peoples club on the Furzehill Road housing development.
Laing began work on the Furzehill road contract in March 1976. 395 houses and flats would accommodate around 1, 400 people. The site was a former Home of Rest for Horses, giving rise to street names like Farriers Way. The contract became an unofficial training ground for apprentices and the old peoples club was built entirely by apprentices. J Tatham represented the Greater London Councils Housing Management Committee

Preserving History and Community - A Momentous Key Handover

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness a significant moment in the history of Farriers Hall Community Centre. The image captures F Bryer, Director of Laings Building Division, presenting Councillor J Tatham with the symbolic key to the old peoples club on Furzehill Road housing development. The photograph transports us back to March 1976 when Laing embarked on their ambitious project to construct 395 houses and flats that would become home to approximately 1,400 residents. The site itself held historical significance as it was once a Home of Rest for Horses, which inspired street names like Farriers Way. What makes this particular contract even more remarkable is its role as an unofficial training ground for apprentices. Aspiring builders honed their skills while working on this development, contributing not only to the physical structures but also constructing the old peoples club entirely themselves. Councillor J Tatham's presence at this key handover signifies the importance placed upon community engagement by the Greater London Councils Housing Management Committee. It highlights their commitment to providing spaces where older members of society can come together and enjoy each other's company within a purpose-built facility. This beautifully preserved print from Historic England Archive allows us a glimpse into both architectural achievements and social progress during the vibrant era of community centers in the 1970s.
