EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Historic England Archive takes us back in time to the grandeur of the British Embassy in Berlin. Standing proudly at 70 Wilhelmstrasse, this magnificent building known as The Palais Strousberg was designed by Augustus Orth and completed in 1867-8. In 1884, it caught the eye of the British government who promptly purchased it to serve as their official embassy. The photograph captures a moment frozen in history, taken in 1939 just before the outbreak of World War II. It showcases one of the most remarkable spaces within this architectural gem - its ballroom. With its high ceilings adorned with intricate chandeliers and opulent decorations, one can only imagine the elegance and splendor that once filled these walls during lavish events and diplomatic gatherings. Sadly, despite its rich history and undeniable beauty, The Palais Strousberg met a tragic fate. Demolished in 1950, it became yet another casualty of war's aftermath. However, through photographs like this one preserved by Historic England Archive, we are granted a glimpse into a world long gone but not forgotten. As we admire this image today, let us reflect on how architecture can tell stories of nations' relationships and histories while reminding us that even great structures are vulnerable to time's relentless passage.
