EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a trade card featuring an etching of James Figg, dating back to the 1790s. The plate measures approximately 7 11/16 x 6 9/16 inches (195 x 166 cm), making it a remarkable piece of artistry. Although formerly attributed to the renowned British artist William Hogarth, recent research suggests that Joseph Sympson, an active figure in London between 1727 and 1736, may have been responsible for this exquisite work. The image itself is striking, capturing the essence of Figg's persona as a prominent figure in his time. Figg was widely recognized as one of England's most celebrated boxers during the early eighteenth century. This trade card served as both advertisement and tribute to his legendary boxing career. The fine details on this print are truly impressive; every line and stroke contributes to its overall aesthetic appeal. It is evident that great care was taken in preserving this historical artifact for future generations to appreciate. As we gaze upon this photograph, we cannot help but be transported back in time when boxing matches were held with fervor and excitement. This artwork serves as a testament to our fascination with history and our desire to preserve these moments forever.
