The title of this artwork alludes to the legendary plum tree that belonged to Sugawara no Michizane, an esteemed figure from Japan's history. It is said that Michizane cared for this tree so devotedly that it would have followed him even when he was banished. A single poem accompanies the depiction of bony fishes: carp, adding depth and meaning to the overall piece.
