Maurice Brazil Prendergast: Idyl, Maurice Brazil Prendergast, c. 1912-1915, Oil on canvas, Maurice Prendergast was an American artist who applied the lessons of French post-impressionism to his own work. Idyl alludes to a classical tradition of depicting nude women posed in the outdoors. Prendergast updates that tradition by mixing in clothed and half-dressed figures who come across not as classical muses but as self-possessed, modern women.
