EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "õ©ëÕ╣àþÑ×ÕÉëÕăÚÇÜÒüäÕø│ÕÀ╗ ÒÇîÕà¿þøøÕ¡úµÿÑÚüèµê»ÒÇì (Artokoloro)" from the Liszt Collection transports us to the vibrant world of Yoshiwara during the Edo period in Japan. The image, captured on a handscroll made of silk and adorned with intricate ink and color paintings, measures an impressive 13 1/8 by 29 feet (333 x 8904 cm). Created by Chobunsai Eishi, a renowned Japanese artist of samurai descent who excelled in both prints and illustrated handscrolls, this particular artwork showcases three gods - Ebisu, Daikoku, and Fukurokuju - making a visit to Yoshiwara. Known as the pleasure quarters of that era, Yoshiwara was filled with scenes of revelry and entertainment. Eishi's unique twist on depicting patrons traveling through these pleasure quarters adds an intriguing element to the composition. As visitors explore bordellos and engage with courtesans for their amusement, they are accompanied by these gods of good fortune. This juxtaposition between earthly pleasures and divine blessings creates a fascinating narrative within the artwork. The early 19th-century piece captures not only the height of spring
