This striking photograph captures the distinguished visage of Alexander Burns Shand, 1st Baron Shand (1828-1904), a prominent Scottish advocate and judge. Born in Perth, Scotland, Shand rose to prominence in the legal profession, serving as a Lord of Session between 1872 and 1890, and later becoming a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1892. Shand's impressive legal career began in 1851 when he was admitted as an advocate in the Faculty of Advocates, Scotland's professional association for advocates. Over the next several decades, he built a reputation as a skilled and respected legal mind, handling numerous high-profile cases and earning the admiration of his peers. In 1872, Shand was appointed as a Lord of Session, a position he held for over two decades. During this time, he played a significant role in shaping Scottish law and jurisprudence. In 1892, he was further honored when he was made a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a position he held until his death in 1904. This photograph, taken in 1903, captures Shand in the prime of his later years. His piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of wisdom and authority, reflecting his esteemed position in the legal world.
