EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora: The Liberal Italian General and Statesman" Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora (1804-1878) is depicted in this colored engraving, an illustration from the esteemed Italian newspaper La Domenica dei Corriere. Born on March 26, 1804, in Turin, Italy, La Marmora was a prominent figure in Italian history during the Risorgimento era, a time of political upheaval and national unification. La Marmora's military career began in earnest when he joined the Piedmontese Army at the tender age of 17. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic prowess. However, his political beliefs set him apart from his contemporaries. A liberal at heart, La Marmora advocated for constitutional government and the expansion of individual freedoms. In 1847, La Marmora was appointed as the Prime Minister of Italy, making him the sixth person to hold the position. He served in this capacity until 1849, during which time he focused on foreign affairs, seeking alliances with European powers to further the cause of Italian unification. Despite his political achievements, La Marmora is best remembered for his military exploits. In 1848, he led the Piedmontese army to victory against the Austrians in the Battle of Novara, a significant turning point in the Italian Wars of Independence. La Marmora's legacy extends beyond his military and political accomplishments. He was a man of culture and education, known for his love of literature and the arts. This engraving captures the essence of a complex and multifaceted individual who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Italy during the Risorgimento era. This image of Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora, the Italian general and statesman, serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and the indelible mark he left on European history.
