EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Vice Admiral Alfred William Moritz Meyer-Waldeck (1864-1928) in his full regalia as the German Governor of the leased territory of Jiaozhou in the Shantung province of China, between 1911 and 1914. The area, which became known as the Kiautschou Bay concession, was transferred to Germany on a 99-year lease in 1898. The village of Qingdao, now famous for its beer and scenic beauty, was transformed into the German colony of Tsingtau. For the Imperial German Navy, this region served as the naval base for their Far East Squadron. Vice Admiral Meyer-Waldeck, a distinguished naval officer, stands proudly in his uniform, embodying the power and prestige of German colonial rule in China. The serene backdrop of the bay adds to the sense of tranquility and control, as the German flag flies high above the water, symbolizing the reach of the German Empire. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, when the world was being reshaped through imperial expansion and the scramble for colonies.
