EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the moment of triumph for the French Zouaves at the Battle of Alma on September 20, 1854, during the Crimean War. The French army, led by General Canrobert, successfully repelled the British and Turkish forces, securing a crucial victory for the Allies in their campaign against Russia. In the image, the Zouaves, renowned for their distinctive red fez-like headgear and colorful uniforms, proudly raise their flag atop the heights of Alma. Their victory, however, was not to be fully realized as the Allies failed to capitalize on their success and press their advantage, allowing the Russians to regroup and ultimately regain some lost ground. This event, which took place in the Crimean Peninsula, marked a turning point in the war, with the Allies eventually prevailing in 1856. The Battle of Alma remains a significant historical moment, showcasing the bravery and determination of the soldiers involved and the complexities of military strategy during this era of conflict.
