This stunning model depicts Anomalocaris, an enigmatic marine predator that lived during the early Cambrian period, around 520 million years ago. Discovered in the famous Burgess Shale fossil site in Canada, Anomalocaris is considered one of the most well-known fossils from the Phanerozoic Eon, a time when most modern animal phyla first appeared. Anomalocaris was a large, bright orange invertebrate, measuring up to 70 centimeters in length. Its body shape resembled an inverted T, with a bulbous head and a long, slender tail. The model accurately represents the animal's distinctive features, including its large, compound eyes, multiple pairs of appendages, and the two rows of sharp, tooth-like structures lining its mouthparts. Anomalocaris is classified as an arthropod, belonging to the Anomalocarididae or Dinocaridida families. Its exact taxonomic placement remains a topic of ongoing debate among scientists, with some suggesting it may be more closely related to modern echinoderms or even ctenophores.
