EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of the Argentine Tango as it was first gaining international recognition on the 8th of February, 1911. The image, taken at a Parisian ball, showcases the passion and intimacy that have come to define this iconic dance. The couple, dressed in the height of early 20th century fashion, exude confidence and grace as they move in perfect harmony, their eyes locked and their bodies swaying in unison. The Argentine Tango, which originated in the late 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina, had begun to spread beyond its borders by the early 1910s. It was an import to Europe, where it was embraced by the aristocracy and high society, who saw it as a daring and exotic new dance. This photograph, which was published in the Illustrated London News on December 21, 1911, under the caption "The Argentine Tango: A New Dance," helped to popularize the dance in Europe and beyond. The tango's spread was facilitated by the rise of mass media and global travel. The dance was documented in films, photographs, and written accounts, and performers toured the world, bringing the tango to new audiences. Today, the Argentine Tango remains a beloved and enduring dance form, cherished for its rich history and the emotional connection it fosters between partners.
