EDITORS COMMENTS
Arthur Tooth, Ritualist Clergyman: A Man of Faith Imprisoned at Horsemonger Lane (1877) This evocative image captures the somber and contemplative gaze of the Reverend Arthur Tooth, an Anglo-Catholic clergyman who was imprisoned at Horsemonger Lane Prison in 1877 due to his religious beliefs. The photograph, taken during Tooth's incarceration, reveals a thin, tall man with a serious expression, his eyes fixed on an unseen horizon through the bars of his cell. Tooth was a prominent figure in the Anglo-Catholic movement, a religious faction that sought to bring the liturgical practices of the Roman Catholic Church to the Church of England. However, these practices, which included the use of ritual vestments, the veneration of saints, and the administration of the sacraments in both kinds, were considered controversial and even heretical by some in the Anglican establishment. In 1877, Tooth was arrested and charged with administering the sacrament in an unauthorized manner at St. Mary Magdalen's Church in Battersea, London. He was subsequently tried and sentenced to six months' imprisonment at Horsemonger Lane Prison. Despite the hardships of his confinement, Tooth remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow inmates, offering them spiritual guidance and solace. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs earned him the respect and admiration of many, both inside and outside the prison walls. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the price that some have paid for their religious convictions, and the enduring power of faith to sustain and inspire even in the most challenging of circumstances.
