EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking image from 1899, we witness an attempted assassination on Captain and Mrs. Spence as they drove through the rugged terrain of Sibi, India. The serene scene of the British couple in their carriage is suddenly disrupted by the approach of a Brahui man on a racing mare. With a swift and unexpected move, the man draws his sword, aiming to attack Captain Spence. The surprise attack causes the captain to lose his balance, and he falls under the wheel of the carriage. In a bold and quick response, Mrs. Spence seizes the whip and retaliates, driving the would-be assassin away. The expression on her face reveals determination and fear as she protects her husband from harm. The man, identified as a Ghazi or religious warrior, was likely a criminal from the Baluch tribe. The incident took place in Sibi, a princely state in the Baluchistan region of India. This photograph, captured in 1899, offers a glimpse into the dangerous realities of colonial life and the courage of those who lived through it. The image is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of Mrs. Spence, who managed to defend herself and her husband during this attempted assassination. The scene is further enhanced by the contrasting elements of the tranquil landscape and the sudden burst of violence, highlighting the unpredictability of life in the late 19th century British India.
