EDITORS COMMENTS
In the 1960s, the aerospace industry was abuzz with innovation and progress, and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) was no exception. Among the various projects underway at the company was the BAC X-11, an impressive concept for a stretched, modified, and upgraded version of the successful BAC 1-11 jet airliner. The BAC X-11 was designed to push the boundaries of aviation technology, featuring advanced aerodynamics, a more spacious cabin, and improved engines. The sleek, modern design of the X-11 was sure to turn heads, with its elongated fuselage and sweeping wings. At the heart of the X-11 was the CFM56 turbofan engine, a powerful and efficient powerplant produced by CFMI (now CFM International), a joint venture between GE and Snecma. The CFM56 engine was a significant upgrade from the Rolls-Royce Spey engines that powered the original BAC 1-11, offering greater thrust and improved fuel efficiency. Despite the promising design and advanced technology, the BAC X-11 project was ultimately cancelled in 1971. The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, but it is believed that a combination of factors, including changing market conditions and shifting priorities within the aviation industry, contributed to the decision. This artist's impression captures the vision and potential of the BAC X-11, a fascinating glimpse into the future of jet aviation during the 1960s. The X-11 represents the innovative spirit and technological advancements that characterized the era, even if the project never made it off the drawing board.
