EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the Battle of Orbulaq, a pivotal moment in the Kazakh-Dzhungar wars that took place between 1643 and 1646. The conflict arose from the struggle for power and resources between the Kazakh Khanate and the Dzhungar Empire, two major powers in Central Asia at the time. At the center of the image is Jangir Sultan, the Kazakh leader, standing on his horse and rallying his troops. His fierce expression and raised sword convey his determination to lead his people to victory. Surrounding him are Kazakh warriors, dressed in traditional garb and brandishing weapons, ready to engage in hand-to-hand combat. In the background, the Dzhungar forces can be seen charging towards the Kazakhs, their horses and banners creating a chaotic scene of battle. The landscape is barren and rocky, reflecting the harsh conditions of the Central Asian steppe. The Battle of Orbulaq is considered a turning point in the Kazakh-Dzhungar wars, with the Kazakhs emerging victorious. This victory allowed them to maintain their independence and secure their borders against further Dzhungar invasions. The print is a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the Kazakh people during a time of great conflict. It also highlights the rich history and cultural heritage of Central Asia, a region that continues to be an important crossroads of trade, culture, and political power.
