Baxters House, High Street, Kidderminster - Dining Rooms

Baxters House, High Street, Kidderminster (not Stourbridge as incorrectly labelled on the card!!) - Dining Rooms. The building was originally the home of the celebrated divine Richard Baxter (1615-1691). He was appointed the minister of St Mary and All Saints Church in April 1641, after earlier being master of Dudley Grammar School and a priest in Bridgnorth. The fighting of the English Civil Wars erupted soon afterwards and Baxter became a chaplain to the Parliamentary army but he returned to Kidderminster in 1647. In 1875 the people of Kidderminster honoured their former preacher with a statue, by the famous Worcestershire sculptor Sir Thomas Brock, that originally stood in the Bull Ring. Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
Baxters House, High Street, Kidderminster - Dining Rooms: A Glimpse into Kidderminster's Rich History This photograph showcases the elegant dining rooms of Baxters House, located on High Street in Kidderminster. The building, adorned with intricate architectural details, holds a significant historical connection to the town's celebrated divine, Richard Baxter. Baxter, born in 1615, served as the minister of St Mary and All Saints Church in Kidderminster from 1641. His tenure began after an esteemed career as the master of Dudley Grammar School and a priest in Bridgnorth. The English Civil Wars broke out shortly after his appointment, and Baxter became a chaplain to the Parliamentary army. He returned to Kidderminster in 1647. In 1875, the people of Kidderminster honored their former preacher with a statue, created by the renowned Worcestershire sculptor Sir Thomas Brock. The statue, which originally stood in the Bull Ring, pays tribute to Baxter's enduring legacy in the town. This photograph, estimated to date from circa 1905, offers a glimpse into the dining rooms of Baxters House, which may have been used as a private residence or perhaps even a gathering place for the community. The image transports us back to a time when the sweet aroma of history filled the air, and the echoes of Baxter's sermons still resonated within these walls. As we admire the beauty of this historic building, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of Kidderminster's past, which includes the influential figure of Richard Baxter and the tumultuous events of the 17th century English Civil War.
