Dated back to 1915, the image showcases a well-worn blockhouse, a testament to the enduring fortitude of the British military presence in East Africa. The blockhouse, with its thick, rough-hewn walls and small, arrow-slit windows, stands proudly amidst the golden grasslands, a stark contrast to the lush, verdant vegetation that surrounds it. The First World War saw the deployment of thousands of British and colonial troops to East Africa to counter the German military presence and protect the vital railways and trade routes. Tembo Camp, located in the present-day Tanzania, was one of the key bases for the British forces. The soldiers stationed here lived in harsh conditions, facing the challenges of the African terrain, disease, and the relentless pursuit of the enemy. The blockhouse served as a vital stronghold for the soldiers, providing them with a measure of protection against enemy attacks. The rough-hewn walls, designed to withstand artillery fire, were made from local materials, such as mud, stones, and timber. The small windows, just large enough for a rifle to be poked through, offered a narrow field of view, but were effective in keeping the occupants hidden from view.
