EDITORS COMMENTS
Suenos Stone: A Time-Honored Testament to Scotland's Pictish Past Nestled in the heart of Forres, Scotland, stands the enigmatic Suenos Stone, a colossal relic of the Pictish era that continues to captivate historians and visitors alike. This monumental standing stone, the largest surviving example of its kind in Scotland, dates back to the 9th or 10th century AD. The east face of the Suenos Stone, as depicted in this evocative postcard from the 1910s, reveals a series of intricately carved panels that tell a powerful story. The top panel, though weathered by time, portrays rows of horsemen, their forms still discernible despite the passage of centuries. The second panel down illustrates armed foot soldiers, their determined expressions etched into the stone. The third panel presents a chilling scene of decapitated vanquished soldiers, their heads piled up, and soldiers, archers, and horsemen surrounding what may be a broch – a circular fortification common in Pictish architecture. The base panel depicts the victorious army leaving the battlefield, their triumphant departure etched in relief. One intriguing theory suggests that the soldiers depicted on the Suenos Stone could be the army of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first king of Scotland, who united the Picts and Scots in the late 9th century AD. Regardless of the exact historical context, this ancient monument stands as a testament to the rich and complex history of Scotland's Pictish past. The Suenos Stone, with its ornate railings, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring allure of Scotland's ancient history and the mysteries that continue to unfold as we delve deeper into the past.
