Bulent Rauf, born in 1911, was a descendant of the esteemed Ismail Pasha, Vice-regent of Egypt, and held close connections to the Ottoman imperial house. In 1945, he married his second cousin, Princess Faiza of Egypt, who was the sister of King Farouk of Egypt. Their marriage ended in the early 1960s. Later in life, Rauf settled in England and married his second wife, Angela Culme Seymour. He dedicated many years of his life to the establishment of a profound body of knowledge based on the understanding of the absolute unity of existence. Since 1975, this institution has welcomed hundreds of students, who have studied the fundamentals of spirituality under Rauf's guidance. Rauf's commitment to the propagation of spiritual wisdom extended beyond the Beshara School. He was the first president of the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society, an organization dedicated to the dissemination of the works of the great Andalusian mystic. His most significant literary achievement was the complete rendering into English of Ibn Arabi's Fusus al-Hikam (Settings of Wisdom), which included the Turkish commentary attributed to Ismail Hakki Bursevi. Throughout his life, Rauf was deeply engaged in translation, research work, and counselling, and his dedication to the pursuit of spiritual truths continued until his death in 1987.
