EDITORS COMMENTS
Arthur McKee Rankin: A Glorious Figure of the American West in Victorian England Arthur McKee Rankin (1844-1914) was a Canadian-born actor who made a name for himself in America, particularly in California. This caricature, created in 1880, showcases Rankin's distinctive appearance and charisma. With his large beard, wide-brimmed hat, and the hint of a gun peeking from his belt, Rankin embodied the wild, untamed spirit of the American West. However, Rankin's career took him far beyond the borders of the United States. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, he toured England with Joaquin Miller's play, "The Danites," which was performed at Sadler's Wells in London. This theatrical production, set against the backdrop of California's Gold Rush, allowed Rankin to showcase his talent to European audiences. The caricature captures Rankin's stage presence, with his arms outstretched as if in mid-performance. The artist, Terry Parker, masterfully portrays Rankin's expressive face and the intensity of his gaze. The image also includes a hint of the theatrical setting, with a woman in the audience, her hand raised in admiration, and a man, possibly Alfred Bryan, the play's author, in the background. Rankin's family would go on to establish a theatrical dynasty, with his son, William Rankin, becoming a well-known actor and director in his own right. This caricature serves as a testament to Rankin's impact on the American and British stages during the late Victorian era.
