EDITORS COMMENTS
Caroline, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox (nee Paget), born in 1796, was the beloved wife of Charles, the fifth Duke of Richmond and Lennox. This stunning portrait captures the grace and elegance of the Duchess in her prime, around the turn of the 19th century. Caroline was known for her beauty, intelligence, and charisma, making her a popular figure in high society. Her marriage to the Duke, who was more than twice her age, was a love match and produced ten children. Caroline's early life was marked by tragedy. Her mother, the Countess of Uxbridge, died when she was just six years old, leaving her father to raise her and her siblings. Despite this, Caroline received an excellent education and was known for her quick wit and sharp intellect. The Duchess was a patron of the arts and a supporter of various charities. She was also an accomplished musician and singer, often performing for her husband and their guests at their estates in England and Scotland. Tragically, Caroline's life was cut short when she died in 1874 at the age of 78. Her death was mourned by her husband and their extensive family, as well as the wider community. The Duke, who survived her by only a few years, was devastated by her loss and was said to have worn mourning clothes for the rest of his life. This beautiful portrait of Caroline, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, is a testament to her beauty, elegance, and the enduring love between her and her husband. It is a reminder of a bygone era of grandeur and opulence, and a tribute to the remarkable woman who graced it.
