EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the tension between two prominent figures of the Victorian theatre world: Sir Arthur Wing Pinero and Richard Claude Carton. Pinero, an English actor, playwright, and stage director, is seen sternly confronting Carton, his British counterpart and fellow actor-playwright. The occasion for this heated exchange was the production of Pinero's play, "Low Water," at the Globe Theatre on the Strand in London during January 1884. Pinero's expression conveys a sense of indignation and disbelief as he exclaims, "How dare you produce my piece after having bought it!" The cause of Pinero's anger is not clear from the available information, but it's evident that the two men had a significant disagreement. Carton, who is dressed in formal attire, listens intently, his face betraying a mixture of surprise and defensiveness. The photograph, taken in 1884, offers a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes drama of Victorian theatre. Both Pinero and Carton made significant contributions to the stage during this period, with Pinero known for his naturalistic plays and Carton for his versatility as an actor. Despite their shared passion for the art form, their disagreement highlights the complexities and challenges that came with producing and performing live theatre during the 1880s. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, provides a fascinating insight into the lives and careers of these two influential figures in the history of British theatre.
