This exquisite pencil sketch depicts Chelonia mydas, commonly known as the green sea turtle or green turtle. The illustration is a zoological drawing from Sydney Parkinson's collection, created during Sir Joseph Banks' commission of natural history drawings on Captain James Cook's first voyage of the Pacific, between 1768 and 1771. Cook's expedition, aboard the HMS Endeavour, was a groundbreaking exploration that led to the discovery of new lands and the expansion of scientific knowledge. The green sea turtle is a marine turtle belonging to the family Cheloniidae and the order Cryptodira. It is named for the greenish coloration of its fat, which is rich in vitamin A. This endangered species is one of the seven species of sea turtles found worldwide, and it is the largest hard-shelled turtle in the Atlantic Ocean.
