Claude de Forbin, Chevalier de la Marre (1656-1733): A French Naval and Military Commander in the Court of the King of Siam This striking image captures the enigmatic figure of Claude de Forbin, Chevalier de la Marre, a French naval and military commander who served in the court of the King of Siam during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Marseille, France, in 1656, Forbin began his military career in the French army before joining the French East India Company's naval forces in 1686. In 1688, Forbin arrived in Siam (now Thailand) as the commander of a French naval squadron. He quickly gained the favor of King Narai, who appointed him as the commander of his troops and granted him the title of Chevalier de la Marre. Forbin played a crucial role in strengthening the French presence in Siam, establishing a French trading post in Thalang, Phuket, and negotiating treaties with the Siamese court. Despite his successes, Forbin's tenure in Siam was not without challenges. He faced opposition from the Dutch and English, who sought to undermine French influence in the region.
