This evocative image captures the legendary moment when Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) received divine intervention during the Battle of Milvian Bridge near Rome on October 28, 312 AD. In this pivotal event of ancient history, Constantine, who was at the time co-ruler with Maxentius, was said to have seen a cross in the sky, bearing the words "In hoc signo vinces" (In this sign, you will conquer). Moved by this vision, Constantine adopted the Christian faith and used the Chi-Rho symbol, the first two Greek letters of the word Christ, as his military standard. The battle took place at Saxa Rubra, a location outside Rome, where Constantine's forces faced off against those of his rival Maxentius. The outcome of this confrontation would determine the future of the Roman Empire.
