EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts a pivotal moment during the historic Coronation of King George VI in 1937. The scene shows the newly crowned monarch, King George VI, taking off his ermine-trimmed robe and donning a satin under-robe, revealing the ancient Coronation Chair beneath him. The Chair, adorned with the Stone of Scone, is situated under a magnificent canopy of gold and silver brocade, held aloft by four esteemed Peers who are Knights of the Garter. As the Archbishop of Canterbury approaches, he dips his fingers in holy oil and proceeds to anoint the King, making the sign of the cross on his crown, breast, and the palms of his hands. This sacred ritual, steeped in tradition and symbolism, marks the formal installation of King George VI as the monarch of the United Kingdom and the Dominions. The Coronation Ceremony, which precedes the crowning, is a significant event in the life of a monarch, filled with ancient rites and rituals that have been passed down through the ages. The anointing, in particular, is a deeply symbolic act, representing the divine right of the monarch to rule and their connection to the divine. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy.
