EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite 15th-century miniature, we witness the momentous occasion of the coronation of King Charles VI of France, also known as Charles the Beloved, in the hallowed city of Reims. The scene unfolds against the grand backdrop of the medieval architectural splendor of Reims Cathedral, where the anointing and investiture of the French monarch traditionally took place. Charles VI, a member of the esteemed House of Valois, ascended to the throne in 1380 at the tender age of six. His reign, marked by bouts of mental instability, was a tumultuous one. Yet, he remained beloved by his people, who saw in him a symbol of the monarchy's divine right. The coronation procession makes its way through the throngs of the king's entourage, a colorful assembly of nobles, courtiers, and clergy. At the heart of the cortege, we find the king himself, resplendent in his regal robes and crowned with the sacred Ampulla, a symbol of the divine blessing bestowed upon him. A courtesan, her beauty and allure on full display, offers a flower to the king as he passes. The scene is a testament to the rich tapestry of medieval courtly life, where the sacred and the secular, the divine and the earthly, intertwined in a complex dance of power, pageantry, and passion. This image comes from the Chronique de Jean Froissart, a renowned 14th-century chronicler and eyewitness to many of the events he chronicled. The manuscript, now housed in the Château de Chantilly, offers a unique glimpse into the history of medieval France, transporting us back to an era of chivalry, intrigue, and grandeur.
