This enchanting 19th century colored engraving depicts Count Bera, the first Count of Barcelona, who ruled from 844 until his death. Born in the 9th century, Bera was a pivotal figure during the Middle Ages in Spain. He is shown here with a long, flowing beard, wearing a belt adorned with intricate patterns, and carrying a 9th century ax as a symbol of his power. The engraving also features the emblems of several important places under his jurisdiction, including Besalú, Conflent, and Girona. Bera is known for his military prowess, particularly his successful campaigns against the Saracens, who had invaded the region. He is also remembered for his patronage of the arts and his role in the consolidation of the County of Barcelona as a distinct political entity.
