Amidst the crisp winter air of Coos County, New Hampshire in 1936, a group of local residents gathered at the Ottaqueechee River to participate in the age-old tradition of cutting ice. The Ottaqueechee River, known for its crystal-clear waters, provided an ideal location for harvesting ice during the cold winter months. The men in this photograph are seen carefully chiseling large blocks of ice from the river, using long, heavy tools. Their faces are etched with determination and focus, as they work efficiently to fill their wagon with as many blocks as possible before the sun begins to warm the river.
