EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting, titled "Defence of Chateau de Hougoumont by the Flank Company, Coldstream Guards," depicts a pivotal moment during the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815. The Chateau de Hougoumont, located in Belgium, was a crucial stronghold in the British defensive line against Napoleon's French army. In this artwork by Denis Dighton, we see the Coldstream Guards valiantly defending the chateau's flank, withstanding the relentless attacks of the French forces. Denis Dighton (1786-1852) was an English military artist who gained an ensigncy in the 90th Foot in 1811 as a favor from the Prince Regent. However, he resigned in March 1812. During the Battle of Waterloo, Dighton made numerous drawings, which led to his appointment as Military Painter to the Prince in 1815. This watercolor is one of his most famous works, created shortly after the battle. The Battle of Waterloo marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a series of conflicts that shaped Europe's political landscape from 1803 to 1815. The historical significance of this event is evident in the intricate details and intense emotion captured in Dighton's painting. The Coldstream Guards, with their red coats and white facings, stand firm against the onslaught of the French forces, their determination and courage evident in their postures. The smoke from the gunpowder and the chaos of the battlefield create a sense of urgency and tension, making this painting a powerful testament to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers involved in the Battle of Waterloo.
