EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the crew of the German cruiser Deutschland are seen boarding the American cargo steamer City of Flint on October 9, 1939. The eventful odyssey of the City of Flint marks the beginning of a series of incidents that would escalate tensions between the United States and Germany, leading the world closer to the brink of war. The City of Flint, an American merchant vessel, was sailing from Baltimore to Sweden when it was intercepted by the German cruiser Deutschland in the North Atlantic. The German crew demanded that the City of Flint change course and follow them to a German port for inspection. The American captain, Thomas W. Taylor, refused, citing the neutrality laws of the United States. The incident, known as the "Deutschland incident," was a diplomatic crisis that strained relations between the two countries. The United States saw the German demand as an act of aggression and a violation of American sovereignty. The German government, on the other hand, argued that they had the right to inspect any ship they suspected of carrying contraband. The standoff lasted for several days, with both sides digging in their heels. The United States sent the USS Reuben James to protect the City of Flint and prevent any further German advances. The German cruiser eventually gave up and sailed away, but the incident left a lasting impression on both sides. This photograph, taken by renowned maritime photographer G. H. Davis, captures the tense moment as the German crew boards the City of Flint. The stars and stripes of the American flag are prominently displayed, a symbol of American resolve and determination in the face of German aggression. The incident would be a harbinger of things to come, as the world would soon be plunged into the Second World War.
