This historic photograph captures the moment of discovery as the intrepid explorers, Lord Carnarvon, Howard Carter, Lady Evelyn Herbert, and Carter's principal assistant, Mr. B. Callender, stand on the steps leading to the doorway of the tomb of Tutankhamen on December 16, 1922. Lord Carnarvon, a wealthy Englishman, had funded Carter's excavation efforts in the Valley of the Kings. Lady Evelyn Herbert, his daughter, accompanied him on this monumental journey.
