13-14 June: A young boy eagerly marks the double page spread of his diary for the 13th and 14th of June. The illustrations on this spread bring to life the seasonal delights and historical events of this time. On the 13th, a charming scene of children playing with a dog by a rural stream is depicted, as they enjoy the warm, sunny weather of early summer. The following day, a humorous illustration of a man attempting to shoot a target with a rifle in the countryside is featured. 15-16 June: The anniversary of the historic Battle of the River Plate in 1837 is commemorated with an illustration of two ships engaged in a naval battle on the 15th. The next day, a scene of sculling on the River Tyne is depicted, showcasing the popular sport of the 1880s. 17-18 June: The 18th of June marks the anniversary of the Great Exhibition of 1851, while the 18th century is represented by a scene of hay making in the countryside.
