An avid racegoer and horse owner, he won the Derby an impressive three times: in 1879 with the horse Persimmon, in 1882 with Eclipse, and in 1899 with the horse Spearmint. His love for horses extended beyond personal enjoyment, as he was also a strong advocate for the importation of American Thoroughbreds to improve the British racing industry.
